D\u00e8s 1914, il participe aux affrontements en Meuse, notamment \u00e0 Cheppy. En 1915, il subit de lourdes pertes \u00e0 Vauquois, th\u00e9\u00e2tre de violents combats de tranch\u00e9es et de guerre des mines. En 1916, il est mobilis\u00e9 dans la Somme, \u00e0 Bouchavesnes, lors d\u2019une offensive d\u00e9cisive.
